Why this site exists
Most dog age calculators online are oversimplified. Some still use the discredited "multiply by seven" rule. Others vaguely ask for small, medium, or large, then spit out a generic number. Almost none of them reflect the actual science of how dogs age — and almost none of them treat your dog as an individual.
RealDogYears was built to fix that. We combine peer-reviewed research (the 2020 UCSD epigenetic aging study and decades of veterinary lifespan data) with breed-specific insights and a genuine focus on the dog in front of you.
How we calculate your dog's age
Our primary calculation uses the formula published by Wang et al. in Cell Systems (2020): human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. This formula emerged from analyzing DNA methylation patterns — biological markers of aging — across Labrador Retrievers at different life stages.
We then layer in breed-specific lifespan data sourced from the American Kennel Club, the Kennel Club (UK), and published veterinary studies including the VetCompass Programme at the Royal Veterinary College.

What we are not
We are not a veterinary service. We are not a diagnostic tool. Results from our calculator are estimates based on population-level research — they cannot account for your individual dog's genetics, health history, lifestyle, or unique circumstances.
Think of our numbers as useful context, not medical advice. For actual health decisions, your veterinarian — who knows your dog — is always the right person to ask.
Privacy and data
We don't collect personal data from the calculator. Your dog's name and age stay in your browser — we never see them, store them, or share them. See our privacy policy for details.
